So I bought new rims and slapped some snow tires on it. It is December in North East. No snow yet, but it’s close. I can feel it. No ice yet, but it’s cold enough.
Do I wait for crappy road conditions to put on snow shoes or do I put them on now?
The concern is that I will wear them out before snow and then ill be shoe-less.
I understand the whole rubber gets hard in cold weather so my all seasons won’t be so good in cold weather, but I have driven on all seasons all my life before now and I had no issues and roads are usually cleared/passable.
I don’t want to waste snow tires needlessly is what I am trying to say. Opinions?

Here in AB I put them on once the weeks forecast is going to be consistently below zero over night. I tend to then leave them on until the overnight frost stops for a week. There is lots of times in between when they aren’t needed, but the weather here can change quick so they typically stay on.

Unless you drive a 1000 miles a week I wouldn worry about tire wear. When I lived in the Northeast snow tires went on around Thanksgiving and came off in April.

Put em on, they don’t wear too quickly unless you’re hooning on them. I got 5 winters out of a set that were driven on snow 10% of the time and dry winter road the other 90%.

my snows go on when the average temps are 40 or so, regardless of snow.

You are not wasting them needlessly. As soon as temperatures drop below 40 degrees F, summer tires become too hard and you will have better traction with winter tires.

Temperature is a much more important factor. My insurance says November through March, my rule is anytime overnight temperatures are under 4C.

This is correct. Also, depends on your summers. If you are running Pilot Sport Cups, maybe put those winters on a bit earlier. If you are running A/S 3's, you can afford to wait a while.

I took off AS2's for the winters...they did surprisingly well considering how badly they were worn

I agree. I’m starting my third winter on my snow tires, and they still look practically new. And I don’t always maintain zero slip angle...

It’s December, you’re in range for snow. I’d throw them on there now rather than wait for a big storm.

Get them on now. They don’t wear out that quickly. Hell I’ve left mine on all summer once when I wasn’t driving much and was being too cheap to buy new all seasons.

yeah, we had a sudden storm before I could get the winters on, and I made it home with a minimal of drama. Considering how worn out they were...its amazing.

Around here winters go on in Nov (Technically BC laws say Oct 1st- Mar31 on most highways).. Mountain passes mean we keep them on until after Easter..

This is exactly how I operate, too. Once it starts consistently dropping below 50 every day, I put them on. Summers shouldn’t be used under 50 very often.

Put’em on now. I don’t know where in the North East you are, but here in WNY we haven’t had temps go above 40 the last two weeks. I’ve put my snow tires on after Thanksgiving for the last 3 years and I’ve still got plenty of tread left on them for several more.

I hate running my snows when there isn’t actually snow on the ground (which really has been only a couple days this year so far) but my other tires were so worn down and wildly dangerous in the snow that the little extra wear on my snow tires is worth avoiding the risk of being caught in the snow with my other set.

i get that. however, you are still going to need a set of A.S. Once you get those, will you be in AS or Snow?

I’ve got two sets of wheels, so come warmer weather I’ll be buying a new set for my summer wheels, some sort of all terrain or mud-light tires.

Yep. At and below 40 those summer tires start wearing 2x as fast. I put my 2nd set on as soon as it starts averaging 40, 30-low 50-high, etc.

Well, my daughter is in Idaho and and she had a low of -2 F the other morning. So, does -2 x F that amount to “Oh, Goody!” times 2?

i think “oh, goody” is only applicable to temperatures between 65 F and 80 F. Exceptions can be made if used in sarcastic tone

negative integers are also called imaginary. I wish this cold weather was an imagination. wake up somewhere off the coast of Costa Rica with a posse of 2-15 girls in bikinis... that would be lovely.

Negative integers are very real. An
imaginary
number would be, for example,
the square root
of a negative integer. Think: square root of negative two. The set of
real
numbers, combined with the set of
imaginary
numbers, comprises the set of
complex
numbers.
All you need is 1 girl in a bikini if she claims you...
